4. Support for local kindergartens and schools

Project 4: Support for local kindergartens and schools

Thanks to the first major donation, a project could be started in 2019 that primarily helps very poor children: afternoon classes to supplement and deepen the English classes in the morning. Unfortunately, the quality of rural education is not of a particularly good standard. 16 children now receive these lessons regularly. In August 2019, Sampath presented a teacher at the village school with a cash donation for uniform sportswear for 12 boys who had won a national competition and received their prizes at an event in Colombo. The parents could not raise the money for the sports kit. With the help of the club, the village's little winners were able to take part in the big sports festival in Colombo. Unfortunately, the corona crisis has also left its mark here. At the end of March, all schools in the country closed, so parents no longer sent their children to these classes out of caution. In addition, shortly after these photos and the video were taken, the teacher gave birth to a baby. Unfortunately, a new beginning (despite the opening of the schools) has not yet taken place. We will definitely ensure that this successful and important support continues. The photos of the festival were taken on February 16, 2020 - the donation is already a tradition. All children receive gifts, not just the very poor. With this comparatively small effort, the association makes a valuable contribution to a positive sense of community among all villagers. The monks give their blessings with recitations and lectures. Sinhalese have a very deep relationship to religious rituals and ceremonies and use very simple means to create a dignified yet happy festival for the children. The last photo shows a plain sink. The village school had to comply with the hygiene rules when classes started again at the beginning of September 2020, but there was no washbasin on the school premises - so help came quickly from the association.
