Project 7: animal husbandry – especially beekeeping

All these beautiful photos are not authentic, ie unfortunately they are not from Jamburegoda. There are very nice pictures of the western honey bee Apis mellifera from the net. The eastern honey bee Apis cerana still exists in the wild in Sri Lanka. Beekeeping as it exists with us with highly developed, manual knowledge does not exist in Sri Lanka or only in a simple form in beginnings. Harald Hochgräfe, a certified hobby beekeeper since 2008 and a member of https://koelner-imkerverein.de/, has taken the first steps towards beekeeping with the eastern honey bee on his land in Jamburegoda. As soon as he gets to know this bee and its tropical peculiarities better, he will try to pass on the art of beekeeping in a modified form to interested people in the village. Unfortunately, as there are no bees in the area, it is very difficult to grow a range of fruit and vegetables in the village due to the lack of bees as pollinators. That is why beekeeping and beekeeping is an essential part of the project for environmental education events.
